Stories belong to the time after the Lakota had come to the surface of the earth. Now that the human were created, the spirits have left the world to see what they will do next. It was then the spirits would choose certain men or women who had the abilities to communicate with the spirits of the wind, water, air and fire. They were given gifts to take care of not just the Lakota people but all nations living on Mother Earth. Ohunkan stories do carry lessons to be learned by telling a story of proper behavior or how they should function as a nation. To teach the values of respect, generosity, fortitude and wisdom were among the lessons in order to survive. The spirit would appear and give directions to whomever would carry the belief and faith of the creator. For that the medicine people came about.
